How About a Filmwasters Book?????
« on: March 02, 2011, 02:00:22 PM »
I think that, after 6 years of still being here, filmwasters should finally get off their collective erses and get a book together. The other moderators are all in support of the idea, but dont have the time to organise it etc, but as I'm likely to have some time on my hands from the summer onwards, I'll be the one who is involved from our side of things. We want this to be a community effort ....

This post is really about testing the water as to:

1. Who has the time/ interest/ skills to be part of the design/ working group to get it moving?

2. Who would be interested in submitting work?

3. Who should be permitted to submit work? (Making sure submissions come from true Filmwasters without denying committed lurkers the opportunity to submit also)

4. Theme or no Theme?

5. just pictures or words too?

True to our Filmwasters ideals, the final article should be not-for-profit with no commercial involvement whatsoever, made by volunteers for our forum members, and if any one else sees fit to buy it, then all the better.

My initial thoughts are for a blurb-type publication.  That way, we wont be restricted by any initial financial outlay. but I am open to suggestions from more knowledgeable and experienced people.

Cheer to all!

I still see myself as fairly new here so I'll try not to step on any toes. so here goes.. ;)
blurb sounds by me. I've seen it in action myself with my gf who's made three books already. I think the quality is good for the price and convenience.

if you want any advice I'd recommend asking greenstphotography here.
he put a lot of work into his book and he used blurb to get it out (see thread: http://www.filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=3392.0 )

other than that? hm.. I like the text-photo relationship that we have at the gallery section of fw with a small thoughtbox going with each photo or set. I like getting into the head of the photographer :)

and um... can I join? I'm not big on time (only seem to have time to join in here at work hours! oh, the irony) so I dunno how I could help with putting the book together but if I think of myself as decent on anything it's putting things together aka working with design.
help aside, I'd be honoured if a photo of mine would be allowed to be part of the book. if you excuse the cheesyness; you guys are an inspiration for me ;D

I can help out in the editing department.

I've been part of several blurb books and would be willing to lend my skills if approved.

I like words with photos, like jojonas said earlier--but mainly just names of photographers, titles and locations.

Too much text gets in the way.

I'm in.  I work from home so have some time to spare.

As far as themes go, I like them for motivation.  I would also suggest the work submitted be new-made within the last year and not old stuff just to keep it fresh.

Anxious to hear what the rest of the gang has to say.    :)

I just talked about it at the dinner table and my mom spontaneously said "I'm buying one!"...

So, yeah, I could send a few pictures for it :)

I think it's a good idea.  I have always thought that the collaborations should have been collated into a book or magazine type.

I think jojonas and astrobeck ideas are good.

Would be happy to help in some way, if I can when this gets off the ground.

Can I humbly suggest that a price point\page count be set, although this assumes you get sufficient entries to fit the page count.

That's a great idea. Not sure if we should have a theme (or several maybe?), but it would be nice if there'd be a way that the images for 'a whole'. Whatever that may mean.

I know I feel it would be better if there was some text attached to the images. Otherwise, it would just look like an elaborate photo album.

It also would be cool if a small self portrait could be included with the photographer's name... I feel it would make is more personal in a way.

very good idea!

I would agree with francois regarding the text, a mix of the two is a good idea.

I like the idea of setting a theme or themes, just to make it specific to the project
rather than submitting your fav. shot from 1980  ;D

I have got loads of time on my hands and would be willing to help out in any way
but I dont know how  ???

I would be happy to submit an image also but feel Imay not contribute enough to the
forum so would be happy to step aside for the more active members if space is an issue.

This sounds great!!! What ever side of the contributers line I fall on I will be happy. I would love to be able to submit, but if I only get to enjoy the book, that would be cool.

I like both the ideas of having a few themes and recent shots.

Been thinking about Leon's question:

"3. Who should be permitted to submit work? (Making sure submissions come from true Filmwasters without denying committed lurkers the opportunity to submit also)"

According to the members link in the menu toolbar at the top of the forum. There are some 797 registered members.  This also give the date registered and number of posts.  Could this information be used to assist in this?

Would a committed lurker have registered for example?

For example Lino who by his own account

"I don't think that I can be classified as a committed lurker (maybe just lurker Cheesy) but this sounds like a very cool idea!"

Has the following entry in the members list

Username   Date Registered   Posts
Lino       2010-02-24    49

I am not sure if the forum software is able to output any more stats such as no of visits for example. I had a brief look at simple machines manual\faq to see if there was any thing obvious.

At the very least I suppose you could limit to members registered before say today's date.

Anyway just my two pennies worth to start the discussion going.

Sounds like it could be fun - I'd be happy to contribute something.

As to who, why not just say it is open to anyone who had joined before you started this thread?

If you really wanted to mix things up, text or titles could be done by someone other than the photographer?

All great stuff so far - thanks to everyone.

I'll leave this up for a few weeks to make sure infrequent visitors have a chance to contribute at this stage before we start a project group going.

Mike (happyforest) - moderator status gives us quite a bit of statistical members details that we can use for this purpose. I'm a bit of a stickler for rules and clarity etc, perhaps too much so, so I'm more than happy for people to tell me if I'm being too restrictive ... but my thoughts were something along the lines of:

submissions should come from people who have one of two factors - either a minimum number of posts on the forum (say 50) OR a minimum amount of time as a member (say 6 months).  I do think submissions should come from bona-fide members though, unless we have a dearth of submissions, but, even then, I'd prefer to have true members having more than one picture in the book, than someone who is along for the ride.

Of course, these thoughts are entirely open to criticism etc :)

This sounds like an excellent idea and I'd be happy to help out in whatever way possible.  I will have more free time after May.

Leon, on considering criteria for contributing it has to be remembered that not everyone uses forums in the same way or for the same purposes.  Number of posts is not necessarily a reflection of "committedness".  (I say that as someone who posts infrequenstly but wants to be included  ;D).  I don't always sign in when I stop by as I'm often at work so that possibly makes me a super-lurker, I dunno.

However it's achieved and whoever is involved goodluck to the project!

I know - and that is my problem here, but I think the other criteria of being a member for 6 months or more should capture people in your position

Regarding the question of theme, I'd say a single theme would be too limiting.  Part of the editing would be to find thematic threads from among the submissions and organize them accordingly; I'm thinking of multiple themes / chapters.

yes i was thinking on this also . . . there should be a number of themes, i.e 4!
and let the submissions fall into whatever theme people feel comfortable
with, be it 1 or all 4 themes!

1 theme would be too restricting and would affect the end product.

Hey here's another idea - if not themed then how about it being an 'annual' - ie work should have been completed within the calender year before publication.  Oh yes, and I'd definitely want to be in this gang!
