Denis Olivier Photographic Spam
« on: August 23, 2007, 11:40:45 AM »
Does anyone else here get spammed by Denis Olivier (http://www.denisolivier.com)every month? I get at least 6 or 7 emails in one hit from his website giving me updates on all his work - all sent to new variations of (insert new word here)[at]leontaylor-photo.co.uk
each month I reply asking for me to be removed from the mailing list - then next month a whole new variations get sent -I've had as many as 15 in one hour before now. I've never signed up for anything at his site.

I really like Denis's photography but I hardly think this is the way to attract customers!

Never heard of him.  But I am realizing that I just don't spam you enough.

That's really bad form. I expect most of the updates involve documenting his on-going search for Michael Kenna's tripod holes...

Leon, There are ways to block this permanently... which email program do you use?
I can try and guide you through the steps...

thanks AO - I use mozilla thunderbird.  it has a spam/ junk  option, but the use of a new name at the beginning of the email address seems to fool it all the time

I was about to send you creating message rules but I might have found an easier solution.

Have you tried using the Spamato extension for Thunderbird?

It is a more powerful spam filter than the one that comes packaged by default.

You can get it at the Mozilla website

It does require you to disable the Thunderbird filter and point the program to your Java library. But from the on, it should be easy flying.

I do recommend reading the Installation Guidelines first...

If the yoyo keeps coming through this thing, then deeper configs will be necessary...

You could try complaining to abuse@ovh.net detailing how many times you have asked him to stop as his server is hosted by ovh.net in France.

I don't know if he is sending the spam from that ISP but a look at the email headers will show you. Whether it will do any good depends on how serious ohv.net or whichever ISP he is using to send the spam is about its Acceptable Usage Policy.

Cheers, Bob.

Actually, I did some looking into it, here's what I come up with:

Server Location:
Server: www.denisolivier.com
IP Address: 213.186.45.17  (its the OVH server)
Organization: OVH SAS
Country: France
City, State: Roubaix, B4

WHOIS domain owner:
Organization Name:  RIPE Network Coordination Centre
Address: P.O. Box 10096
City, State: Amsterdam ,
Postal Code: 1001EB
Country: NL

I did find something, he does business with www.dolist.net which is an e-mail, sms and direct marketing outfit (it says so on his contact page). They manage all his incoming e-mails... and possibly all outgoing.

OVH.net is an ISP in France.
Looking at the header doesn't always tell the story as spammers often spoof the IP... Give false addresses and such. I would first trust the plugin...

So, there you have it.

The Spamato plugin should stop him as his address will be put on an international blacklist automatically.

They can't spoof the IP address of the sending host.  However you do need to know what to look for as they can add fake addresses to try and confuse things.  In any case I do not think it is that level of spam: it's not Viagra or porn spam sent via zombied PCs, it's just a jerk that does not understand basic good manners.

If he is using a 3rd-party outfit to send email then you may need to contact them.  Some will ignore you but any legitimate outfit will do the right thing because they do not want to end up on the aforementioned RBLs, so it's worth a try.

The MX records on DNS show that his incoming email is received on the same IP address as the web server so he can't say he never received the requests to desist....

Cheers, Bob.
