A little photography-related reading
« on: April 27, 2020, 01:37:03 PM »
For those finding house arrest a bit lacking in mental stimulation, a couple of photography-related reads:

BBC on Lartigue: https://www.bbc.com/news/in-pictures-52373308

Chicago Sun-Times obit on a previously unknown photographer, with photos: https://chicago.suntimes.com/2020/4/24/21232988/charles-custer-route-66-photos-americana-obituary?fbclid=IwAR1B6MHba07KWebjZZPXWnktxA69y-FeDZvV1vwn2hqZT7AAPODbylgrYDo . Direct link to all the photos: https://www.okmorephotos.com/backtothepast

Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

Thanks for this. Those Custer photos do have a unique quality. I think they're 5x7? And they almost have this HDR look to them, which makes me wonder how they were lit. And then the nice rectilinear wide-angle lens. I got lots of technical questions!

Definitely some sort of wide angle lens - someone in the RFF thread suggested it looked like a Protar 4 or 5, which apparently is a small f/18 LF lens. In the top shot he's seen holding a powder flash, which could be what gives them the distinctive look.
