Last night, I saw pictures from the big wind storm that hit the north of the British isles and Germany.

I'm wondering if everyone is OK.

A bit of tree felling here. On the west coast however cars and busses got blown of the road, houses got their roofs torn off, boats washed ashore, altogether unpleasant.

We had 86mph winds here in Stornoway and I believe they topped 100mph in Ness (most northerly point). Not aware of any incidents across the islands tho'

I know they said on the news that winds reached 250km/h in Hamburg... that's scary fast!
(it's 155 mph... yikes!)

Yes, the storm was heavy in North Germany, a lot of trees fell, air and railway traffic was closed down, kids were off school and a few people (less than 5?) died. Most people had to stay at home. Luckily no major desaster. The flood in Hamburg was even worse than the big one in 1962 but the dikes were inforced and withstanded. In South-Germany, were Urban and I live, we barely noticed anything except some heavy wind but no storm.

Thanks for thinking of us Francois. But I live in the far south (close to the Alps) and apart from some wind that was a bit stronger than normal and a bit of snow we didn't notice anything.

Yes .thanks for the thought François et al. The problem downs the mid and south east coast was the tidal surge following the winds. We had in excess of +3 metres in places. Lots of evacuated houses on the north and east Kent coast, but I don't believe there were any major floods in my part of the country. Nick Moys area was quite badly hit though. There were whole houses washed away by the tide. I don't think there were any deaths though thankfully.

There were 2 deaths - 1 in Nottinghamshire and 1 in Lothian and (as Leon says) some people on the east coast lost homes to the sea

I was putting up a trussed roof in it untill it got too bad and went to the pub, my son was taking his HGV driving test in it (army) bet that was fun

Some tragedies but, thankfully, few. Mostly damage, disruption and inconvenience in the UK. Now comes the mundane - but important - bit as far as I'm concerned as I work for a major insurer. We'll be working with loss adjusters and builders to get policyholders' homes habitable again and prioviding businesses with income and new premises until they can get back to normal trading.

Without wishing to be glib or cynical, though, it always amazes me how many cars and vans end up under water. I mean, other than cars in areas where there are no hills or those vehicles where the owner is away from home, how difficult is it to drive them up a hill / out of harm's way?

Hull was bad my son was out till 3am sand bagging with the army

had a tree break on the middle just by my apartment building. thankfully it fell away from the house instead of into our window.
no big accidents here besides a open-air bathouse-dock thingie that dissapeared into the water.

Its been quite bad on the East Anglian coast, those Filmwasters who went to the Southwold meet a couple of years back will remember the beach huts some of which were smashed.
Some people have lost their homes on the Norfolk coast, the seal population has also been hit.
Can't really bear to go and take images though, most of the beaches are still unsafe where cliff erosion has been bad.

I feel sorry for those who lost their homes at Hemsby as currently the UK has no compensation policy for property lost to coastal erosion. To make matters worse one of the property owners have had quite a lot of their belongings stolen! It never fails to amaze me how low people can get... grrrr!

2 deaths was related to the storm here in DK. A sailor died trying to secure his boat and an elderly lady died after the wan in which she was a passenger crashed. Following the storm we had flooding of lower parts especially in Roskilde fjord where a smaller town and some areas of summerhouses found themselves under water. During the storm the trains etc stood still, the greatbelt bridge and the femern ferries was closed down for days.

When I see storms like that, I'm always in disbelief. It used to be that you could only get strong winds like that near the tropics during summer... not northern Europe at this time of the year!

And the scientific in me keeps wondering what the heck is going on with the climate?
