wasting bigger film
« on: May 20, 2007, 02:41:14 PM »
I couldn't help myself.
I told myself it would be harmless going to a camera collector fair. And I must be a convincing liar because I bought the story and mooched on down to a hall filled with be-cardiganed gentle folk, and wandered around pretending not to be all that interested.

Of course it was fate that should put a mint condition Toyo-view 4x5  on the first table I came to. All those deep seated 'camera envy' feelings rushed to the surface and before I knew it I was talking turkey, doing the business and lugging home a very large wooden box full of bits.

Perhaps to atone for my splurge I should sell the rarely used little 120 Cambo SC. Heaven forbid that I should become a monorail collector too ;)

There's never a practical reason for doing something like this. Perhaps this forum should be sub-titled 'moneywasters', but none the less I'm looking forward to using this bestie to pull type 5x4 negs on portraits and still life. Maybe even for pinhole.

What fun.

Can't wait to see some prints out of it.....and yes, it is a joy to use with pinhole.

It will change your life.

Congrats on your find!

Is it just me or every time we go to a camera show we end up bringing back something we had no idea we desperately needed in our lives :)

like my Perocut 35mm filmcutter. Almost better than scissors, but hey, I enjoy using it.
ps I got a toyo deluxe off ebay and am still trying to cobble together a kit, last thing to do is get a lens transferred to a toyo board and then get some film...

Change my life?.. whrew, sounds like a religious experience! Yep, I think I'll need to explore pinhole- Otherwise, being the blurryographer I am, it doesn't seem compatible with my karma.

No. It's not just you.

Nice looking bus! If you need a Polaroid 545 back for it (though I imagine you've got a box full), shout, as I've got a spare...

Ta- all sorted.  Actually a 5x4 Pol back is the only large format thingy  I've ever owned till now. I use it, sans camera, face up under an enlarger to make image transfers from 120 trans. I've done a whole series of quirky transfer images for a wine client who uses them on his labels.

Then this baby came with it's own Pol, which I've already ear-marked to be gaffa'd on to the back of a 100sheet 5x7'' Ilford paper box Pinhole camera.

cheers

Just catching up with posts on the forum after a couple of weeks doing various design activities for the FW online empire. Don's post caught my eye because I go to camera fairs and buy without caution and I've always really fancied a nice 5x4 view cam.

They always cost too much though and instead I ended up buying a beaten up old Graflex RB 5x4 SLR on evilBay:

But it's really limited in many ways (not to mention barely functioning), so I envy you your impulse buy. There's an annual camera fair in London that I've been to for the last 3 years, but just managed to avoid this year due to Damion and Jim Green not being able to make it.

'Moneywasters' - I like that a lot.   ;D
