End of an era - fuji films RIP
« on: March 06, 2010, 06:59:35 PM »
As per an earlier thread, I just saw  fuji's official  list of films that will be discontinued as of march 20, 2010 that Fuji sent to distributors & retailers.

all b&w, with  the exception of across & all color negative film.  Slide film will remain in production.

No word on the peel apart pack films.

I loaded  up on neopan at my local camera supply shop.  An unhappy student who has been learning the zone system with neopan panicked and bought 50 rolls...

All color neg film is out from fuji's list (the folks at my camera supply shop showed it to me). Reversal will remain in production for now...

Wow, this is a disaster - literally.

So now we really only have Kodak (sans Tri-X 320) and Ilford?

Foma is still going. An underated film in my book.

But, as I wrote the initial post while sitting outside a cafe in a touristy section of Seattle, people were waking by snapping photos with their dslrs, iPhones and the person at the table next to me was reading the 'paper' on an amazon kindle.

That's where we're headed unfortunately. The very materiality of our artistic production hinges on market value.

gregor, sorry, it's either got lost in translation or i'm a little groggy.....when you say colour neg is out, do you mean that they are stopping all of it?

Astia's gone.
i'm finding it really hard to believe they'd give up on something so perfect.

The list of no more included  all 120 & 220 color neg film. Leon, I'm not sure on the 135 film. I have to go back next week to buy more 120.  I'll take some  iPhone photos of the entire  list from fuji.

I know I am new here, but this doesn't match with the recent company press releases in Japan.
Here they are are deleting, Fuji 160C in 120, Neopan 400 in 120, all flavors of T64.

If this is isolated to the US, is the big question.  The official news of Fuji Japan, in Japanese is at

http://fujifilm.jp/information/articlead_0029.html

Hope this helps.

It doesn't match the JP news, but it matches the haphazard release from Fuji UK a while back and Commander Ray has the official notice...

Huh?

I'd dead confused now.  What's going and what's staying?

Is CMDRRAY's list correct then?  Is the emphasis of the disaster on 4x5 quickload?

Say it's so...

I'm pretty damn confused now too ... but, I think the best bet is to trust cmdray and the Japan Exposures crew, seeing as they are pretty damn close to source so to speak or in the industry.

I'll take iphone photos of Fuji's list when I go in next week. It may be specific to the US market, or markets outside of Japan, but cmdrray has it right based on the list I saw.

I think Neopan 100 (120) is on the discontinued list though. I'll know for sure when I see Fuji's official list again.

I don't think any of these BW films are technically available in the US directly from Fujifilm...they are all imported by distributors. Just like the peel-apart films.

the black and white I can live with because Ilford films are fab, but the colour - 160 up to 800 - is an effing tragedy

Whoah! This is going to take a while to sink in (as well as for the dust to settle on what exactly is being discontinued and in which region), but still....bl**dy hell!

 :( :( :(

The only good thing I can take from this is that peel-apart has survived thus far. If that had been on the list I'd be feeling as bereft as Vicky is over the 160. Also, when I ran out of money and realised (around the same time) that I'd never be a world famous photographer I kind of went the Francois route and started buying any old film as long as it was cheap. So I ended up with multiple boxes of Superia (various flavours) and Reala, both of which are fine by me.

For slide film I was always an Agfa man anyway and the loss of RSX II still has me reaching for my hanky  :(

The worrying thing though for me is an assault on any MF film currently in production. MF sales must be way smaller than 135 (guess, based on no data whatsoever) and therefore more at risk in any cost-cutting exercise?

I don't see Pro400 H colour negative film on CMDR's list, so assuming it's still going to be produced.

Awww.
I just discovered Neopan and really like it. Possibly like it to the extent that I prefer it over HP5 -which I never thought would be true of any film (not totally sure as I've only shot a few rolls and haven't experimented enough).

As for the others haven't used them much but having my options reduced is never a good thing...

the instax films will probably be around for awhile since they've renewed marketing, but i wouldn't be surprised if the peel-apart disappears in the next couple years.

I have just discovered a liking for Reala but don't think I've seen that mentioned and will presume for now it's safe.

this just gets more depressing the more it sinks in. Are we really destined to a future of Fuji Pro 160s add-ons?

And why does it matter to me if we are?

Sorry for reviving an old thread but i can see no mention of Superia 100 (120 roll). I've got two rolls left and suddenly it's disappeared from the web. Does anyone know if it's discontinued?

I've started using it in my 120 pinhole and suddenly the rug is pulled.
