Needs 10 extra hours in the day.

« on: February 04, 2010, 11:50:47 AM »

It's been 7 months or so since we last did a Filmwasters podcast. This is bad. Leon, Susan and I did convene with a certain El G Stettinius sometime in November for a fun hour chatting on Skype in the podcast style, but for a variety of reasons it was never actually turned into a podcast. Unfinished business there for sure - we may try and resurrect some of it in the next few weeks. If not we'll get together a brand new one as soon as poss.

In the meantime we thought we'd have some fun and knock up a video podcast and see how we got on with that. Leon, Salvo & I filmed some pieces at the Mass Photo Gathering in London on the 23rd Jan and then some more at the excellent 19th Century Photography exhibition at the British Library. The following weekend Damion was down in London so we filmed some more and then I edited it yesterday. It's very rough, but we did have a good time making it, so it might be worth watching. I think we'll do some more. They'll be different. We learned a lot.

So, anyway, if you want to see how Damion handles a packet head over to http://filmwasters.com/podcast

at long long last, we have finally pulled our best efforts out and Ed has put together a new Podcast. Not only that, it's an all-singing all-dancing Multi Media experience! Worth 20 mins of anyones time! http://filmwasters.com/podcast/

Wicked!   Grin

The quality on the camera phone isn't too bad!  Maybe the future's digital?  Cheesy

That piece to camera whilst driving was very Tony Soprano/illegal!

Watched the first five minutes but waiting for more buffer, it's a bit jerky.

Could you make the file available for download?

Vicky/Chops: thanks for the feedback. Glad you got through it without turning off.

Chops, re the download idea...yes, the file will be available for DL as an MP4 from sometime tomorrow. In future to avoid confusion I won't link to the video on our Podcast page until the MP4 is ready for download. Vimeo -  who are hosting the file - have a policy of not releasing the MP4 until 24 hours after the original upload. There's a WMV file up there now, but it's about 370MB and will automatically be replaced by the MP4 file tomorrow, so I didn't bother linking to it. Hope that makes sense.

The MP4 should also appear in podcatcher and RSS feeds (e.g. iTunes and Zencast) from sometime tomorrow.

Guys, that was great! The quality looked really good for a camera phone. Congratulations to Salvo on some great shots of the protest, and the 'pointless' tutorial what can I say!!  Wink It's was a real shame I couldn't make it along.

Could you make the file available for download?
Streaming video is always available for download! Just get the DownloadHelper addon for Firefox. You press play, as soon as it starts, you click on the 3 rotating balls on the menu bar, select the file and where to save it, stop the running video and wait for the download box to say it's over. That simple...

Indeed. Good point, Francois. Thanks.

I mention the MP4 specifically because I assume people here will want to download and play the video back on the same mobile device (typically a smart phone of some sort) and Firefox add-ons and other FLV type captures don't work in that context.

Also, I need files to show up in RSS feeds so that the iTunes masses (me not one of them BTW) don't get left out.

I just finished watching the podcast and noticed you're looking for a chemist Wink

Having never tried coffee staining a Polaroid, I could only guess at what is going on...
I know that coffee will add a "filter" on top of the image (light brownish amber) which will increase the overall density of the image. Since colors add-up differently, it is entirely possible the bluer image is simply the result of this optical illusion (a more baby blue color, thus containing more cyan added to a light brown containing more yellow should give a deeper blue if I got my color theory right...)

But on the other hand, coffee is acidic, something which could react with the alkaline goop left on the print surface to make some odd chemical reaction.

Coffee also being a developer, it is also entirely possible that the alkaline goop has a high enough PH to activate the development capacity of the coffee just a tad bit in order to affect the development...

I will keep on looking if I couldn't find something more "scientific" on the subject... we never know.

But anyways, it still was a cool experiment Smiley and overall fun show (nice to see the guys in living moving colors Smiley )

I was thinking about the protest and instantly thought Guinness World Record: most people in a single place at the same time who carry a camera...

(I'm happy as for once I didn't have to wait to get to the library to download it! Yeah!)

A most informative & entertaining podcast, and very well put together too.

One thing does concern me though, when the two presenters returned to the Polaroid tutorial after going away for a shave, the level of hair on their chins/heads did not appear to have changed. Can the producers please reassure viewers that this was simply a continuity error and that no mutual shaving of any kind had actually taken place?

It took me a couple of seconds, Al, but I see what you're getting at. You may rest easy, nothing untoward occurred. The shaving referenced in the podcast refers to the other video tutorial we were shooting that day; "Carpentry for Beginners: whittling a staircase from a Giant Redwood".

Best Regards,

Was this an excersise in "large format teasing"Huh? first we have a blurry long range shot of an outdoor LF'er at the demo "he's putting his darkslide in" squeals our presenter!  Wink but no zoom-in, no probing interview about the use of LF in the modern age...then the "elephant in the room" during the coffee tutorial.... come on FW get your 4x5's out!!!!   Grin Grin Grin

Guys, just a quick correction re an earlier note in this thread. The MP4 download of the video won't be available until next week. I thought Vimeo converted the source file after 24 hours, but it's actually a week. I'll update the podcast page with a link to the MP4 when it's available, but in the meantime anyone can download a 377MB WMV file here: http://vimeo.com/9202284

The reason I haven't put this link on the podcast page is twofold:
  • The WMV will disappear in a few days.
  • WMV is not a particularly friendly format for most mobile devices (e.g smart phones). MP4 is generally better for those devices.

Apologies for the confusion. Adding video to our output is new to us & we're still feeling our way a little. It'll be more joined up next time.

That was great !  The video format really works and makes the whole thing much more interesting being able to actually SEE photographs being talked about.  The music works well too.   The only negative point is that when talking I noticed that the sound was slightly out of sync with lip movements - quite common on web video.

Hope you manage to do some more, I think it's well worth it !!

there really shouldn't be any need as the podcast page is not connected to the forum software - a simple way to check is to log out of your forum account, then access the podcast page from the link on the fw homepage www.filmwasters.com and it should work every time.

Lots of non-members access the podcasts without problem ... perhaps there are other gremlins at play here?

I couldn't find anything definite, but it seems that there's an upper limit to the data rate, resolution, ... that the iPhone/iPod touch supports. Maybe the podcast is over that limit?

UPDATE:

Urban & Leon:
The MP4 file that I originally uploaded isn't compatible with iPhone/iPod Touch as I thought. I have no re-encoded the video into what I'm told is an iPhone/iPod Touch compliant M4V.

Please give it another go & let me know. Sorry for these teething problems. It will all be slicker next time.

-----------------------------------------

CamerAsian:
Thanks for your feedback too. I can only reiterate that the video is available for the whole Internet to view & no sign-up is required. If your friends are having problems viewing the content it's more likely to be problems with their devices/browsers not supporting the video (either Flash or the downloadable format).

Ed, Leon and Salvo:  Bravissimo.  The most enjoyable Filmwasters video podcast yet.  Thanks for putting it together.  I hope this format becomes something like regular.  I especially liked the exhibition review.  I may try to get to London to see it.

I have been missing using my cameras this last month while I am in Portugal for music work.  Filmwasters has been a great place to experience photography vicariously.  I'm looking forward to getting my hands wet in the darkroom when I return home next month.  Until then, I plan on lurking here.
