Filmwasters Goes Hardcore

Posted in News at 8:28 pm by filmwast

Hard SkinAnother magazine spot for one of the ‘Filmwasting Five’. Ed’s photos of the mighty Hard Skin accompany the band’s tour diary article in the current issue of legendary underground punk zine, Maximum Rock’n'Roll. OK, so it’s not a mag known for it’s quality photography per se, but the San Francisco-based mag goes all over the world and Ed & Damion both grew up on it, so we’re chuffed. Track down an issue in your local independent punk record store or order online from a million distributors.

Out of My Imagination.

It seems all is not as assumed in the Holga world. For example, why does the Holga vignette so much, and was this a deliberate function of its design? Is the whole concept - as often assumed - the product of a cynical marketing exercise?

Like much in this world, the truth is often far removed from the circulated stories…

Recently in Hong Kong, and with the help of a good friend Tony Lim, we decided to hunt down the source of the Holga concept, and come to answer a few of the questions from the man who invented this curious device; Mr. TM. Lee from Universal Electronics.

We discovered; WOC stands for Wing On Cheung. Holga means ‘very bright’ in Cantonese. The Holga was supposed to only be a 645 as in 6×6 mode it resulted in too much ‘four-corners-dark’ according to the amicable Mr. Lee. He glued the frame-count selector in the ‘16’ position as a result.

The original market for the Holga was mainland China, and 120 format was chosen to keep the camera cost to an absolute minimum. Not a hint of designing anything other than a cheap and cheerful camera for the masses.

Yet, it has now become part of the resurgence of film-based photography, and has played a role in keeping the 120-format kicking along for a whole new set of customers. This was ‘out of my imagination’, said Mr. Lee rather proudly.
